My wife had spine fusion in the early nineties and she only looks fifty now .
On a serious note she had fusion and removal of all the shards of the disc and they said she would need repeat surgery in about ten years it is now over twenty years later and she is holding up well mind you she watches her weight and does regular exercise I don't think she will need any extra surgery for a few years yet .
But this is only one success story so yep collate and review all info.
as long as I wake up alive I'm happy
Because it could be worse
I fractured my spine at L2 when I was 16 but didn't receive medical attention until 6 months later and the final result was that it healed on its own causing calcification in the wrong places which causes pressure on my nerves. But in saying that with exercise, keeping my weight down and other pain tools I am able to manage it with only flare ups when I over do it.
Wish I could say that about the rest of the injuries.

you just need to find it!
