I injured my upper back in July. I felt something pull while getting out of bed one day. I had CT & MRI scans which were all clear.

I currently see a physio, myotherapist & GP & have since it started. I've had a schedule of stretches & exercise to complete twice a day since August. Pain was managed with OTC medication, heat packs & resting on my back which was the most comfortable position.

It's now October & my upper back has improved. It's not 100% but could go pain free for a day or two.

However I now have a new issue that stated 6 days ago. No known cause as I haven't done anything new or strenuous.

My entire back is stiff especially on the left. I have numbness in my left leg (mainly around the knee) & intermittent shooting pain from my lower back (I think possibly sciatica related but GP & physio haven't mentioned anything about it when asked).

The main issue is my left arm experiences numbness & causes pins & needles. There is sharp pain around or under my left scapula but it's hard to determine its location.

The doctor is unsure what it can be. I've been perscribed perscription anti-inflammatory & opiate pain medication as OTC isn't cutting it anymore. The only real relief is lying on my back which relieves the pain somewhat.

Hoping this is not the start of a chronic pain condition I'll never get rid of. It's only been a week but is impacting work already. Mentally I'm thinking worse case scenario & am under a fair amount of stress/anxiety due to my partner undergoing cancer treatment.

Should I try another GP, get fresh scans or wait to see if the stretches, exercise & meds work? I'm a hypocondriac these days & am unable to get a straight answer.

Compared to what I have read already this is trivial against other people's experiences.

Just hoping for some advice or guidance or recommended practitioner to help.

Hi, I don't have any answers ... I was just wondering how you were going with both the pain and finding more answers yourself? have they done any more scans including x-rays yet?

Thanks for replying.

I have had more x-rays which has found my spine leans to the left. The bones, discs, ligaments & muscles are all fine for my age.

Found out in the last week though I'm diabetic which might be causing neuropathy through my body. Also diagnosed with sciatica in my left leg.

GP has put me on Metformin (for the diabetes) which can cause muscle pain as a common side effect.

I have to lose weight, exercise & eat a better diet as it will be less pressure on my joints. This may help with relieving some of the pain but I'll be living with it for the rest of my life.

Previous medication was Celebrex & Palencia SR but they didn't do anything. GP has me using Panadeine Forte & OTC while the Metformin kicks in hoping the side effects alleviate (I'm hoping some muscle pain is from this).

Hi KTF,
Where are you ?
You say your pain is in the upper body and nerve pain down your arms ? Have you asked to see a nuerosurgeon as I had some similar symptoms and they related to a damaged disc and medial nerve impingement my nuerosurgeon performed a discectomy and stopped the pain .
Hope this helps

Thanks for replying Johnno.

Over the last few months the pain in my upper back has eased somewhat. I still get get pain in the original spot I felt the muscle pull but it's not as bad. The tingling sensation I get in my arm isn't constant anymore either. GP & physio both still think it's muscular related still & it's not fully functioning while other muscles are compensating.

Since quitting smoking though the sciatic pain in my lower back & left leg is driving me insane. I'm still only on the Metformin for my diabetes as I read about bad side effects of Endep. I am unsure that the Celebrex & Palexia SR helped when I was on them as the pain was never any less than I currently experience.

I'm being monitored for now & have weekly appointments with an acupuncturist (also a GP), fortnightly appointments with my physio & monthly appointments with my GP.

If things haven't improved by the end of January then I'll request a referral to a neurologist or a pain management clinic. This is the time when my next diabetes check is so hopefully I'll have an improvement by then.

Hey KTF,
Don’t go to a neurologist you need a nuerosurgeon as there could be nerve impingements in you spine and these guys are generally the best .
I had chronic tennis elbow and golfers elbow both sides and I was put on anti inflammatories for 4 years one arm would swell up (lh) at night the two years ago I had my right arm go painfully numb ,I thought uh oh heart attack and went to a specialised X-ray mob for MRIs they referred me to a nuerosurgeon , to cut a long story short the first twit put cortisone into C5/6 ,the second was wispy washy and the third (a lady) looked at the MRIs and said oh shit ,s3nt me for full flex X-rays neck, full spinal ct with radiation and full spine MRIs she had me booked into hospital within a week and I’d have an Anterior cerviacal discectomy with fusion and guess what the tennis and golfers elbow was the first thing I noticed was gone when I came to .
Think about going to a pain physician as they are awesome and will generally work with your gp controlling your pain medication .
I’ve been on endep for about 5 years without any side effects I’m also on lyrica for nerve pain the only downside with my cocktail Lyrica,Endep, sertraline,OxyContin ,circadian and panadol osteo is I fall asleep , I forget what im thinking of and sweating .
