Hi john01,

A multi disciplinary pain clinic is where a number of different specialist health providers work together with the aim of the best outcome for you as an individual.
So there may be a pain specialist, a psychologist, physio, nurse etc who will come up with a plan and targets to reach your best potential bearing in mind trying to reduce any flare up of the problem along the way.

The advice they give is based on many years of experience and research in chronic pain and what has given the best results.

The course is specialised in chronic pain and how to manage every day life around the pain but to try and encourage us to work around our restrictions and work towards an easier life.

Its not a miracle cure but certainly if you have never attended a chronic pain clinic or a course and live with chronic pain I'm sure you will benefit in some way.

Good Luck

Jo

"Just thinkin' about tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow 'til there's none

When I'm stuck with a day that's grey and lonely
I just stick out my chin and grin and say, oh

The sun will come out tomorrow
So you gotta hang on
'til tomorrow, come what may!"

Thanks Jo.
I don't need it now as my cp is under control. I was desperate two months ago and wanted the pain go away. But information here is still helpful as I may need it one day. Never know.

Hi John01,
When you say your chronic pain is under control, is that because the medication you take is masking the pain, if so you are relying on these meds, the idea of using multidisciplinary pain clinics is to teach you how to manage your pain by the actions and routine of your daily life, the tools they teach are for limiting what creates and how to manage the pain, by using medication alone to control pain alone you tend to over do activities, which then leads to greater reliance on medication to restore the balance, and you go through boom and bust cycles, with the bust cycles getting longer to recover from, at some stage you will reach the maximum medication allowed, what then ?.
Better to get these tools working in your favour from get go, this way both medication and what you learn work in tandem, giving you longer time span your pain is under control.

Don, we should put that post of yours up as a permanent advertisement, because it is spot on. Spoken from experience aye!

We need to suffer some of the pain to gauge our activity involvement. Learn to live with the pain, not mask it so we can't feel it.
A lot of pain can be ignored, once you delegate it as harmless pain.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide, is what to do with the time that is given to us. (Gandalf the Grey)

There are only two options in pain management, one is to reduce pain level, the other is to learn some skills from a multi-disciplinary pain clinic so that we can put up with the pain (live with the pain) better. The latter doesn't reduce pain per se.
