Animalia created the topic: Pain Clinic SA Migraines/headaches
Hi, I am looking for reccomendations for any Pain Clinics who specialise in Migraines and Headaches in South Australia.
I have been under the care of Prof Rolan at the Pain Clinic RAH, but sadly he is retiring from clinical practice.
Neurologists in the past have not proven to be very helpful for my chronic migraines and my local GP is learning from me.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

Hi Animalia,
Living in SA you are limited in the selection of pain clinics, the RAH is the only public hospital that has a dedicated pain unit, here is a website that lists private pain specialists in SA www.painmedsa.com/profile
I attend the pain unit at the RAH, and have now for 8 years, my pain doctor only works one day a week at the clinic, the rest of the time he works from a private office on Port Rd.

Hi Animalia and welcome,

Don is right about the lack of choices that we have here in SA. If you are already seeing a Dr. at the RAH Pain Clinic, I would think that you should be able to switch to one of the other doctors there. They are all very competent and the bonus is that all your notes etc. would already be there. I am sure that they just wouldn't be deserting Prof Rolan's patients. Have you been told anything about what will happen?

Thank you for your replies. Prof Rolan referred me to a neurologist for botox treatment few months back. He has lead me to believe no point in going back to the pain clinic and that hopefully the botox will work. I am going to talk to my new neuro and see if he is willing to try otger treatments after the botox. But at present he only seems interested in that. I guess because that was why I was sent to him. Prof Rolan has been terrific always ready to listen to my suggestions along the way. And I always have to stay one step ahead due to medications becoming ineffective after time.

Hi Animalia,

Until you know whether or not the Neurologist can help you, personally I would remain under the care of the pain clinic. It's a long wait to get back there if you need to. You may still appreciate what a pain specialist can provide even though you are seeing the Neurologist.

Did you ever do the pain management course at the RAH while you were seeing Prof. Rolan? This course comes highly recommended. Don has done it and received a lot of benefit from it. It is well worth considering if you haven't yet done it.

Hi Animalia,I concur with Mary about staying on the pain clinics books at the RAH, the last I heard it is up to a 2 year wait if you were referred back to them.
Doing the pain management course through them was the best move offered to me, it came at a stage when I was at my lowest point in my pain journey, for me it wasn't a matter of pain medications not working, more my system rejected any pain medications tried, I was dealing with severe side effects, sleep was just about non existent, the only thoughts going through my mind was putting an end to it all, serious thoughts.
That is when my psychiatrist pushed to get me into the course, I has big reservations on how they could make a difference, it did, I learned to accept pain, manage my pain with the tools they teach you and continue to use those tools on a daily basis, but you have to go into the course with an open mind, some of the modules may seem basic, but all the modules tie into one another to form the big picture.
