Hi everyone. Just thought of opening this thread about natural remedies to find some for myself but also to encourages people to look into natural herbs and remedies that don't have a million side effects.

This is what is what Baha'u'llah, Founder of the Baha'i Faith said about herbs and medicines.

“Do not neglect medical treatment when it is necessary, but leave it off when health has been restored.... Treat disease through diet, by preference, refraining from the use of drugs; and if you find what is required in a single herb, do not resort to a compounded medicament. Abstain from drugs when the health is good, but administer them when necessary.”

Excerpt From: Compiled by the Research Department of the Universal House of Justice. “Health, Healing and Nutrition, a Compilation.” Bahá’í eBooks

But which herbs is the question. Also hot and cold temperatures have been recommended in treating pain. So there's a lot of options for people to try to get some relief from together with their medication until science evolves to healing with natural remedies.

I have had a bad leg that burns and am on Lyrica 75mg once a day at night. Then I take Epilim for Epilesy and blood pressure meds and often I feel terrible with odd chest pains and all sorts of symptoms from the drugs. But I've been feeling a lot better since I started takin natural things.

So I've started looking to herbs. Recently I've been taking magnesium for migraines and they really work whereas I took about 8 Panadol that never helped. Then I'm trying Kyolic Garlic and Coq10. I notice the Coq10 does give me more energy. I haven't noticed anything from the Garlic tablets.

I ordered some olive leaf extract for my blood pressure but I'm continuing my medications just that I'm trying to find some extra supports for these conditions. If I eventually can improve a lot so as not to need one of the medications I will always first ask my doctor if it's ok.

But for pain I'm yet to come across anything as I'm ignorant in natural remedies apart from Deep Heat and Magnesium.

But I think it's worth our while to look at natural remedies not as a substitute yet while the science is still in its infancy but as a support for pain as they can help,us greatly if what Baha'u'llah said is true. But with healing the entire person must be considered not just an arm or a leg because we are told that happiness is a great remedy and helps many illnesses and that our physical condition can rest a lot on our outlook and contentment in life.

Hi Worldcitizen1919, thanks for the post. I have moved this post out of general discussions and into the correct category, so that we can keep the right topics in the right categories.

And thanks for raising this subject again, because it is an important one!

There are a couple of things I think need to be said with your post:

1. The first one is we don't promote any religious sect here or their beliefs in any kind of medical or health therapies. This is a website that fully supports the scientifically proven pathway for medicine, so anything else is going to have a warning attached to it.

2. And of course that warning is for people to be very, very careful when taking any king of herbal medicine or supplement, especially while taking man made synthetic drugs, because some of these in combination can not only make you very ill and put you in hospital, they can actually kill you due to severe reactions between the drugs.

Everyone must realise that these so-called herbs, are drugs. They use the word 'herb' to make it sound like they are a safe thing that you can find in your own garden and eat, then you will suffer nothing but good health. Well, many or most of our medications today come from the exact same source. Yes, from plants and out of someone's garden. Might be a farm size garden, but out of the ground nonetheless.

So please, if you decide to take any alternative type of medication, ALWAYS let your GP, Pain Specialist and Pharmacist know, BEFORE you start swallowing them, just in case you are putting yourself in danger.

Now, on to the actual herbal drugs.

Some of these things are actually pretty good, when used in the correct manner. I myself take Blackmores Bio Magnesium and because I cannot tolerate any fish oil tablets, I take Flaxseed oil caps 3 times a day. Not only do I get the goodies from those capsules, the oil actually seems to assist with my IBS and diverticulitis issues. It seems to help settle by belly. When there is a cold or the flu in the house, I use a very good quality Vit C powder that has some herbal extracts in it. This shortens the duration of the illness and its intensity. Good stuff, even if it is expensive.

A lot of these herbal medicines are okay and they do have some benefits to them, but the truth is they just don't pack the same amount of punch when it comes to assisting with bad pain. Like Worldcitizen says, it is hard to find anything to replace the pain drugs.

The most important thing I have found after decades of suffering chronic pain, is to have the cleanest possible diet. I have basically meat, fish, veg and fruit. I eat very little carbs and rarely have alcohol. Unless of course I'm having some steak. A nice red goes down beautifully with that, but not too much or my IBS kicks in.
And I am addicted to salad. If I have a plate of salad, like I do when I cook my own fish, I can barely fit the fish on the plate, because the salad is piled a mile high. And of course my guts really blows up after that dinner from all the fibre, but what the heck, I have to enjoy eating something I really love.

Anyway, the message we need to take from this, is that some supplements or herbal drugs are okay, but our health professionals MUST know about them. If you go off experimenting without telling them, you could be putting your life in danger. Seriously!

You make some very important points Peter. Yes, it's absolutely dangerous to experiment with anything that is not prescribed to us by a qualified physician or in agreeance with him/her.

I'm not really happy with drugs and wish we had more ways of healing than reliance on drugs which have so many terrible side effects.

But what about Naturopaths and Chiropractors, Herbalists, Homeopathy? I mean, just because the drug companies lead us in one direction doesn't mean there's not other ways of healing. I think the term doctor includes Dr's not working for drug companies and that there is a choice.

Yes there are some good therapies around but which ones are good, is something that we don't know for sure. This organisation only promotes those that have been proven scientifically, so that we do not get ourselves into trouble. There are too many dangers and if we promote anyone and anything, we are gong to end up in a whole lot of trouble at some point and will lose the forum and all we have worked for.

I put this category in, so that we can discuss some of the supplements that people use, and also have this very discussion you and I are having right now, because it is a very important one to have. So many people use other types of drugs and they either help or they don't. There is a little bit of hokus pokus out there too, because there are always charlatans and crooks out there who will make money out of the chronically ill.

As for some of these supplements. Heck, go back 30 years and they would have just about hung you for talking about these things. And look today. We have some GP's telling people to go take Magnesium, different other minerals and other different types of herbal medicines, because they know that they actually work.

There has always been this fight between modern medicos and those who practice old medicine. I like to refer to the old medicine as 'Traditional Medicine' and the new stuff as 'Modern Medicine.' That way there is no confusion. Well, in my broken drug affected mind at least.

There are now crossovers, because of the efficacy of some of the traditional medicine, but the bulk of it is unproven and because of that we must warn against it, due to the lack of proven evidence. We now know that there are some inherent dangers and some of those can lead to death. So, it is an unwise thing to do, in taking any of these without letting all health professionals who are dealing with you, know about them.

I had a hernia operation about a month ago. The Anesthetist asked me to stop taking my supplements about 3 days before the op, just so they would be out of my system by the time I went under the general. I guess this is because they don't want any surprises when you are zonked out. And neither do I to be honest. Who knows how my body will react after taking a multivitamin like the Bio Magnesium, when it is added to all the dope they use to knock me out, then bring me around again. It's a risk no one wants to take.

There is benefit in all forms of medicine for some people. The big problem is proving it. How much of it is placebo and how much is real? That is a question only some very big double blind trials can answer. In other words, modern scientific research.

And I would like them to do the research, because I believe to some degree as you do, that there is efficacy in some of the traditional medicine and therapies. We just need to do the work to prove it.
